Aging pets need special care to ensure that changes in their health are monitored and addressed. Pets are more likely to develop health issues in their senior years since their bodies are slowing down, putting them more at risk of infections and diseases. We recommend seeing your pet at least twice per year to assess their overall well-being. 

What happens to my pet’s body as they age? 

Aging gracefully is a normal part of your pet’s life cycle. Just because your pet is aging doesn’t mean they can’t experience a good quality of life. With proper veterinary care, our team can support your pet to live a happy life throughout their golden years. Not all pets show signs of aging around the same time. You’ll notice changes in their body, including: 

• Difficulty moving around 
• Weight loss/gain 
• Cloudy eyes 
• Lumps/bumps on their skin 
• Difficulty urinating/defecating

At what age is my pet considered a senior? 

Depending on your pet’s age, breed and lifestyle, they’ll be considered seniors at different times. For example, small dog breeds tend to age slower, entering their senior years at around 10 to 11-years-old. Medium dog breeds like Golden Retrievers are considered seniors when they are 8 to 10-years-old. When your pet approaches their senior years, we’ll need to see them for a bi-annual wellness exam. How should I care for my senior pet? 

You’ll need to adjust your pet’s daily routine to support them as they age. Some pets require special diets because they could develop food allergies or need lower caloric intakes to prevent weight gain. Obesity can increase your pet’s risk of developing health issues, so it’s essential to be mindful of weight gain. Your pet should also regularly exercise and engage in play or walks. They’ll also need regular grooming to keep a healthy coat and skin.
